Ridgelands/Lainalten Region

Post by roerich »

Worsas had some questions about this region yesterday, as it is currently a large number of cells with nothing special planned for them.
On the region map I tried to outline an idea I had for this area. http://i.imgur.com/dDeWOlM.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A set of cliff terraces with an inclining elevation going east. The most abrupt vertical elevation would be at the border of the Reach, creating the effect that worsas has described several places of the rest of Skyrim as being of a higher elevation than the Reach. I think the whole area, from the Farmlands to Eldersblood to Sundered Hills, could be a new region called "The Ridgelands" or something to that effect. It would show some elements of the Whiterun tundra, but retain some more mountainous qualities compared to the mostly flat tundra.

I've tried to sketch my ideas here:

I don't know if this makes much sense to anyone else (perspective is hard), but compare it to the region map. This is looking east from approx. Beorinhal (though at a much higher altitude obv.)

That drawing is... ms-paint at its best. It doesn't 100% match but the regional concept itself is spot-on. It can also be seamlessly implemented with what is already in this area, except that the flora and groundtextures might need to be switched. And it would probably make sense to edit the landmass file a bit more before it's split into claims and handed to exterior modders.

Great pictures, the third one in particular captures the vision I had for this region.

Visually this region should be mix between Falkar Foothills, Sundered Hills and the bright green hills south of Solitude Forest.

What do you think about reworking the lime green grass texture a bit? Make it more brown-orange, but still visually distinct from the set used in Falkar Foothills?

roerich, you arent't really making these in MS paint, are you now? These regional concept sketches are some of the most valuable things for this project, it gives a great understanding of the visuals and context of these areas.
It's also absolutely wonderfully executed.

I also would like to see a slight color shift in these lime green textures, they always struck me as looking a tad weird, as Yeti has stated elsewhere. In fact, upon first seeing them I thought they were some kind of placeholder. The textures themselves are good, it's just the colors that look unnatural, sort of like using neon colors for vertex paint. Just looks odd in relation to the rest of the color palette.
