To clarify some things about the geography of the Reach in relation to the surroundings.
Here is a rough idea of the altitude of the Reach compared to surrounding areas. The Reach is like a highlands pulled apart, to create lush and fertile valleys and canyons. The region is thus some of the best farmland in the surrounding area, which explains some of the reasons why it has been so contested throughout the ages. It is Skyrim's bread basket, but also the bread basket of Eastern High Rock and even Northeastern Hammerfell at times.
