Creature Art

Post by SYMBIOTE DINOSAUR »

I wouldn't really call this concept art, its more just some drawings I made of possible creature designs.

I also made a drawing for a creature in a table top RPG I wrote, but it was based on some morrowind creatures so I thought it could possibly be used as inspiration for something.

Meh, I don't think those are of particular use.

You do not need to be a proficient drawer to create useful concepts. The key to that is that your drawings have something to offer in the first place. Either they are somewhat depictive about even small details or they offer a broad variety of interesting ideas, or both. In essence, you use concept art for visualizing your ideas for something. But if there is neither quality nor quantity to these ideas, there is no point in visualizing them. This is less much a problem for things like environmental assets than for creatures. Creatures take a lot of effort to make and they should be based on solid concepts.

I'm probably a bit blunt and condescending to you right now. Frankly, I'm not an extremely proficient modeller myself. But I don't want to be nice just for the sake of it and would rather see improvements happening in mine and everyones work around here, instead of avoiding honest feedback for the sake of not offending anyone.

In your case, it might make sense to put more thought into the individual creatures you want to show and spend more time getting the proportions of your creatures right and showing more details on them. You also want your creature concepts to be interesting, so you want to think about making the imp more unusual, for example. Right now there is nothing to learn for me from your Imp above. I could just aswell look at the imp in Oblivion. A concept drawing only makes sense, if you have something new to show.

I said they weren't really concept art. They are low detailed and only show one angle. The last picture is of a sketch I made to put in the manual of a table top rpg I wrote a few months ago, it wa some type of creature that the drow elves ride so I just posted it here because it is such a morrowind looking creature. Don't worry about offending me though, why would I post these if I didn't want people to give me honest feedback, I'm only offended when people write stuff like "crap" because if it is how is someone saying that gonna help it get better. I have been working on more art for the imp though, I'm trying to make it look more alien like with just eyes and no mouth instead of a goblin with wings like in oblivion.

Hmm.. I was overreading that, indeed. But you were posting these as creature proposals in the P:C - thread before, so I assumed they were still meant as such.
Looking forward to your improved creature concepts then.

Here is a more detailed version of the Imp. I went with a more arthropod theme.

I also sketched an imp on an imp stool mushroom.

Hey Symbiote Dinosaur,

I've been meaning to reply to your updated concept since the day you posted. But somehow I got distracted all along and I wasn't sure what to write anyway, I think.
The new take on the imp is more interesting for sure, I imagine it like a very small, almost moth-like creature. The labels are helpful to recognize elements that are difficult to see on the drawing. A good idea to add them. Don't use your mobile- or smartphone camera but a scanner to digitize your drawings.

Generally, if you wish to pretty up your drawings, rather than applying a surface layer, increase contrast and sharpness on the drawing itself.
Be warned that there is far more interest in things like city layouts, sceneries and other environmental stuff. Your creature concepts probably won't get used in a long time, if at all.

They are fun to draw, so even if they don't get used I would not in any way be offended. I actually used a real camera to take the photos, they look pretyy awefull when I just up the contrast and sharpen them here is an example. They are intended to be moth like, with a 5 ft wingspan.

I don't have any way to scan things unfortunatly, plus I'm not that great at making things that could be considered concept art.
