Armors of Cyrodiil

Post by Saint_Jiub » Sat Jun 27, 2015 5:49 pm

Updated and revised version of the post from the old boards. Concepts and descriptions will be forthcoming.

I've been pretty dissatisfied with my previous armor contributions for a while, so I'm leaving the iron, steel, and bronze as incomplete for the time being.

Here is the concept art for most of these sets (helmets, at least). A couple of things:
  • Second row on the left is concept art for a Studded Leather Helmet, which I kind of like (a lot more than TR's version, at least)
  • "Falkreath Style" Studded Leather Helmets would likely also occur in the Bruma County. SHotN has a use for them too, obvs.
  • Kvatchi and Oloman (with an a) Steel Armor imply the existence of similar sets for Chorrol and Skingrad. These sets are our equivalent of the House-affiliated Bonemold armor, which shouldn't take too much work: just a unique helmet design and maybe a slight edit to the cuirass. I think somebody on the Bethsoft forums made a Kvatchi Steel Helmet recently.
  • Not too sure about the name Arctus for a Colovian set: (Zurin) Arctus was a Battlemage, likely making him Nibenese.
Not sure about names - maybe check what we have on Colovian vocabulary.

Bonus: concept art of Second Era Imperial armor. Objects in this style could feature in Reman forts, or serve as inspiration for artifacts of that Era.

Hi. I'm new here and I was wondering if I could draw up a concept for the Palace guard.

We have just recently included the kvatch helm, btw. But the newtscale helm isn't in our data files yet. Thankyou for the heads up.

I would like to throw this piece in for the Colovian Militia Armor
Image
I would personally use the Imperial Steel for the Gauntlets and Boots.

Maybe something like these for Bruma/Falkreath guards? It seems more uniform than what you would expect of Skyrim, but kinda Nordic at the same time.
I personally can see some similarities with both Nordic and Imperial style. Plus masked helmet looks cool :D What do you guys think?

Perhaps for the Nibenese Battlemages, something along the lines of the Mananaut design can be used? I'm talking about the armor and robes, so just erase the space helmet in your mind. This (Especially the first) is one of my favorite TES designs, and I think it, or something inspired from it, would look perfect for the part.

These look great! I am actually digging the mask as well :D But I suppose if masks are from Mananauts then they don't belong on regular Battlemages. But the armor design is still great.

vrolok we already have an armor similar to your suggestion- it's a Redguard armor style though:

I'm down for that Anu- and definitely mananaut artifacts should be present in the game regardless.

Cool armor, I like it! And yeah, even though in real life I would consider them different in real life, they would be too similar in game like Morrowind. At least I am moving in the right direction, right?

What about scale armor like that:
[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/agcrPnp.jpg[/hsimg]
And I was thinking about masked helmet like that:
[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/ojM0oU1.jpg[/hsimg]

It could be Bruma Scale Armor (or whatever region it could fit best) or something like that. Mask reminds me of the Kvatch Helmet concept from MK.

Some more different armors, just because I found them:

Colovian design, main inspiration being Kvatch. These images are largely of Slavic armor designs, if you liked them and wanted to find others.

[hsimg=]https://armstreetfrance.com/catalogue/f ... reaves.jpg[/hsimg]

These are my favorite designs, I really like the idea of chainmail and leather (Perhaps dyed) together, with more vibrant cloth underneath:

Masks, possibly for higher-ranking wearers of the armor:

These are all very cool ideas. I'm especially fond of the face masks, and using the Mananaut style as a basis for Nibenese styles is a good catch. That dyed leather scalemail is a style we should definitely emulate: an armor almost exactly like that called Klibanion Mail was mentioned in a book about Colovia.

I'm moving this thread to asset development.

Updated OP with our existing concept art. Please keep discussion of armors within the framework of the armor categories listed above- suggestions should either be tweaks for existing concepts or developing the sets that don't have finalized concept art, but at this point I don't want to add a lot of extra categories needlessly.

[unpopular opinion] I don't particularly like the facemasks for Colovia- Infragris and I have talked about this before as I used to be on the other side of this discussion, but combat masks in TES tend to be a merish concept: Ayleid bird-masks, Dunmeri Daedric and Indoril, Orsimer (and implicitly Altmer) armored masks.... I'd like to steer clear of it for our armors, especially for Colovia.

With that said, these two armors I do like and definitely think should be incorporated in some capacity.

Saint_Jiub, your concepts are very sweet, both Colovian and Nibenese!

Regarding the masks - I can see your point, but I am not sure it should be that strict. I think some men armors can have masks, but faces should be more human on them. Often with beard or mustaches. I think such helmets do not appear merish.

Early preliminary work on a Colovian chainmail set. Infragris or worsas, would one of you have time to model some of the details like the armor plates and belt onto the mesh, the way you guys did with the Redguard armor and Imperial Cult robes?

I can handle it. As an idea, because I'm so fond of analogies and similarities: How about adding some elements from the imperial legion armor to it, just to show some relationship? I could also see leatherstraps with studs on them, holding the plate or otherwise some leather/cloth armor revealed between the chain layer and the cloth. All of these things could be painted on the model for now and turned into real elements in the second step.

What I don't like at this point, is the length of the armor towards the bottom. It makes the armor really stand out (not necessarily a bad thing), while it should maybe be a common, non-elegant armor, which would be better shown with a very short armor skirt.

On a related note, I believe you mentioned wanting to rework the Colovian Prince set, Saint_Jiub? I think it could benefit from a similar treatment, adding some badges, sashes, maybe a small cape to the mesh, to bring it closer to the PGE1 artwork. It's a very monochrome set at the moment.

Speaking of the PGE art, we should not forget about the Anvil leather (?) set or that Sancre Tor lamellar look.

No specific plans, but I definitely agree there's an opportunity there, the current textures are well made but kind of lacking aesthetically.

Another day's work- shortened up the undershirt and added details to the front- you can also see where I'm blocking out additional armor plates for the sides. Ignore the pants for now, they're pretty early WIP.

There is something I really wish to ask from the modellers. There is an armor which I believe should definitely be in our data. I will not argue, it is very generic, nothing to write home about. I am talking about the so-called padded armor:

[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/CB3MIWl.jpg[/hsimg][hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/pDBMpJ0.jpg[/hsimg]

Now, before anyone says it's too generic for Cyrodiil. I know and I agree. But, it is one of most basic armors of medieval used by huge number of people (Vikings, Knights, Mongols, etc.) Thing is, it is extremely easy to produce if you have cotton, because it's pretty much just several layers of cotton. But it offers extremely good protection, much better than leather (even studded, which really is just decoration). Depending on how thick it is, it could protect you even from arrows. They were also often worn under the armor, though that we cannot do.

So I want to ask somebody with the skill to make it, at least the gambeson, which we could call "Padded Cuirass". Pretty please! :roll: Some other stuff like a cap would also be very cool:

[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/Pu9D5Pi.jpg[/hsimg][hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/5LIJQu9.jpg[/hsimg]

Just as a basic armor, which could be used in Cyrodiil or Skyrim or High Rock. It could be a relatively good light armor in game or even medium armor, because it can be quite heavy.

Possible use in Colovia:

That last image looks like an interesting idea for the more northen colovians. But I'd generally rather extend on the neglected studded leather cuirass for the armors. Leather or cloth with large stuts on them seems to be a common armor in Falkreath.

studded leather
Personally, I hate it :(

It will not protect against anything, it's just a Hollywood thing or some LARP equipment at best and it is one of famous examples of silly fantasy design. You can consider studs as simple decorations, nothing more. There is a historical armor which looks similar to studded leather, but it's actually metal plates held by leather, not just leather with studs. This really is more rock star clothes than actual armor. And unlike some more unique designs, like Chitin or Glass, you can't just pretend that it works because "Magic!", since it is so close to real-life.

Not that it should go, it's already in the game and all that. We should use it. But man, it is extreme bullshit :lol:

I like the padded armor idea! This could be made even better if the cuirass will have sleeves and the pauldrons will be jack chains:
[hsimg=]http://www.therionarms.com/reenact/ther ... c1123f.jpg[/hsimg]
I think this is possible to implement with right skeleton rigging.

Orcs use padded cloth as their underarmor - check the tx_a_orcish_cloth.dds texture of vanilla Morrowind.

I'm aware that "studded leather" is a load of Morihaus but eh, it already has a place in the setting.

Not sure about jack chains, seems kinda unnecessarily complicated to me, but at least a simple gambeson should be implemented as basic armor to give to bandits or adventurers. Cheap and effective. And there is almost no excuse for not having it, it's very simple to invent. Logically speaking, there must be gambesons, even if they are a bit boring, they are the basic stuff. Alpha and omega of all medieval armors :) Everyone used them in different shapes and forms. So I find it highly unlikely that there are none in Tamriel or Cyrodiil for that matter.

[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/kTnvpJr.jpg[/hsimg][hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/Vh7ksHV.jpg[/hsimg]
[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/vGnUuFO.jpg[/hsimg][hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/FZddTei.jpg[/hsimg][hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/qQRD31d.jpg[/hsimg]
I think we should include one, maybe a few different color versions, though that is not necessary. A cap would be nice too, but also not necessary.

[hsimg=]http://i.imgur.com/7huDxnJ.jpg[/hsimg]

A simple gambeson (aka padded cuirass) is a must have! I am not even asking because Cyrodiil needs it per se, but Tamriel definitely needs it. Should be a common piece of light armor around Cyrodiil, Skyrim, High Rock and Hammerfell with stats slightly above studded leather. Everyone who can afford chainmail won't be using it. More savage and primal bandits won't be using it. But more or less civilized people should have access to it, so I hope to see one implemented someday.
