[Q1-4-Mis] Gold in the Nets [Reviewing]

Post by Infragris »

Ask the fishermen and dockworkers about latest rumors and they will mention that one of the fishermen, Kayd, has been trying to pawn off a golden amulet. They indicate surprise at this, as Kayd never struck anyone as a thief. Indeed, he claims to have found it, but if this is true, then why does he try to sell it on the black market? Special mention is that Victus Pilious would be very interested in this matter.

Journal prompt to look up either Victus of Kayd.
Victus is somewhat interested, and will offer a reward for further information.
Kayd will at first deny, but a decent disposition will make him reveal he found it in his nets while fishing. He would like to sell it off so that he can take a boat to Rihad with his wife Ashamti, but can't find a good buyer. He has to keep this a secret, because his contract with Victus states that any such objects found while fishing belong to his employer.

Option 1: go to Victus, who will give a decent reward for the information. This will naturally cause a disposition drop with Kayd and his Ashamti, as well as with Fennias and Josantha Maxim, who are his Ashamti's parents. Fennias is the island's smith, making this a bad idea.

Option 2: keep the secret for three days and Kayd will disappear. Rumor on the island indicates that he left. Fennias Maxim will thank you, and offer you a small reward as well as a steep discount for his services.

Option 3: Offer to buy the amulet yourself. You have to pay far more than the amulet is worth, but will also receive the reward and discount from the smith, as well as receive the amulet, which is a unique item.

k. Kayd isn't actually behind the granary in the latest dialogue file, but he will be soon.

Also, one thing about approaching Victus Pilious: I haven't set this up yet, but there's supposed to be a mini-quest before he is actually available. Victus resides in a locked, guarded room in his manor, and all communications go through his secretary, Estarria. You have to have a letter of introduction from Hasell or the baron, or else you have to bribe Estarria with a bottle of Aliyew.

Basic layout is supposed to be like this:
  • Victus is in his inner chambers on the top floor of his mansion. There are two locked (unique) doors, and a number of mercenary guards to discourage lockpicking.
  • Asking the servants or guards in the manor about Pilious refers the player to Estarria, who has an office in the east wing (I think).
  • Asking the servants or guards in the manor about Estarria will get some comments about his character. Also mentions how he really likes Aliyew (see Geraneus rumors in the main file).
  • Estarria's dialogue is "locked off" with forced choice answers and goodbye option (to avoid persuasion conflicts). He is very curt, claims the his master should not be disturbed unless it is a matter of importance. Player has the following options:
    1) Bribe Estarria with money. This always fails, Estarria makes some dismissive comment about provincial foreigners who don't know how things work in Cyrodiil. Heartlanders expect their bribes to be personalized and thoughtful (unusual Imperial customs).
    2) Offer a letter of introduction. This is for the main quest: Cocious Hassel or Baron Helvor could provide one when/if it is necessary to talk to Pilious.
    3) Bribe Estarria with a bottle of Aliyew. This option should only appear if the player has talked with the manor's servants, guards, or with the gossiper Geraneus in the Sload's Tale. Estarria praises the player's refined taste, and allows them entrance. Should be possible to use the "unlock" command for the two unique doors from the dialogue field, or through a script.
    4) Goodbye option.
  • After the doors are unlocked, the player can talk to Pilious who will be impressed that the player has managed to persuade Estarria.
  • There should also be a unique response from Pilious if the player has not persuaded Estarria, but stealth/lockpicked their way in: same thing basically, he is impressed with the player's skills and hints that he may have some jobs for a resourceful agent. The player can also pickpocket a key to the unique doors from Estarria, or perhaps find it elsewhere in the manor (in the treasure chamber?)
  • If the player killed a guard or Estarria, Pilious will refuse to do business.

There is another problem here, I'm afraid, I must mention. This file edits some dialogue entries that are also edited in other quests, mainly latest rumours, which leads to the selkie-rumors not unlocking the selkies-topic when they are loaded together, for example.

The rumors about Kayd having found an amulet and that Victus Pillious would be interested to hear about it is not filtered in a way that kayd himself, Ashamti and the two Maxim can't mention it. None of these people have an interest in Victus Pillious learning about it, after all. And Victus Pillious, if you are able to ask him about latest rumours, shouldn't know about it in the first place.

The quest was definitely broken, when I tested it, but I'm not sure, if it was due to it being loaded together with the other two quest files. I wonder, if these quest files shouldn't be merged for that purpose to ensure they are still intact when loaded together. Kayd and Ashamti didn't disappear after three days nor after buying the amulet from him. Buying the amulet didn't affect the disposition towards the two maxims.

You have already put so much effort into this all, but each time I return to testing a quest, something different is broken again. :( I don't know, but maybe it would help to write up a list of states the quest can be in and what every npc should say at each of these states just to have a checklist to go through ingame to ensure that everything works as intended. But something needs to be done so quests can be delivered in an error-less state.

It would play as part of the main questline, for when the player has to meet with Pilious for the first time. Estarria is being obstructive if the player tries to approach Pilious without a good reason, while the main questline/piracy stuff would in fact be serious business.

Is there any chance you could split off the Estarria denial part of this claim? It makes things difficult to parse in the esp, and would be more in place if you integrate it into the main quest progression.

The whole thing where Estarria refuses to grant you access to Pilious unless you jump through his hoops.
