Spoiler
TIMELINE: from Topal the Pilot to the War of Righteousness
MIDDLE MERETHIC ERA
(c. ME 2000)
The Aldmeri explorer Topal (or Torval) the Pilot sets sail from the Summerset Isles, looking for the mythical continent of Aldmeris. He is the first Elf to explore the shorelines of Tamriel and interact with its native populations. Topal explores to course of the river Niben up to Lake Rumare, reporting the existence of Khajiit, Argonians, and a mysterious race of "Bird-people" inhabiting the future site of the Imperial City. He claims these people give him their islands as a gift in return for the art of literacy. Topal's account suffers from several anachronisms, and may be a forgery meant to justify the later Ayleid land-grab in this area.

The Niben valley and its environs are inhabited by numerous human tribes: the Nedes, Kothringi, Al-Gemha, Keptu, Men-of-Ge, Al-Hared, Men-of-Ket, Orma, Yespest, Horwalli, and many others. Later generations will remember them as "Nedes", though this was the name of but one of many tribes.

Likewise, the areas later known as the Gold Coast and Hammerfell are inhabited by human tribes, though these are culturally distinct from the Niben ones.

(c. ME 2000 - 1500)
Various Aldmeri factions colonize the coastline of Tamriel. Presumed birth of the Bosmer, Khajiit, Falmer, and Dwemer civilizations.

Founding of the first Ayleid city-states in the Cyrodiilic Heartland. These Elves were dissenters from the Aldmeri mage caste, fleeing their home culture's restrictions on Daedra worship and the usage of Dawn Magics. Unlike other Elven colonists, the first Ayleid settled deep in the Heartland, subjugating and enslaving the indigenous population through use of their summoned Daedra armies. The Ayleid city-states are tribute-kingdoms to the throne of Alinor, though the vast distances make enforcing Summerset law all but impossible.

Several enterprising Elven families explore an colonize the northwest of Tamriel, without relinquishing their ties to Alinor. First among them are the Direnni clans.

Small groups of Atmoran colonists settle the northern shores of Tamriel, fleeing war, hunger, and ill-defined political struggles in their homeland. This slow immigration movement continues for the next hundred years.

Construction of White-Gold Tower, known as the Temple of the Ancestors or the Citadel to the Ayleid. This magical construction, erected through the knowledge of the Dawn Magics, amplified the power of the Ayleid sorceror-kings and allowed them a measure of control over the fabric of reality, similar to that of the Ada-Mantia Tower in Balfiera and Crystal-Like-Law in Summerset.

The Ayleid Hegemony expands to the east and west, founding city-states and fortresses in modern-day Colovia, southern Nibenay, and Argonia.

Saint Veloth, an Aldmeri prophet and mystic, proclaims the faith in the Good Daedra. Rejecting the decadence of Summerset culture, he leads a mass migration of the faithful Chimer into the promised land of Resdayn, later known as Morrowind.

The colony of Saarthal is founded in northern Skyrim, being the first large-scale Nordic settlement on Tamriel.

LATE MERETHIC ERA
(c. ME 1000)
The Night of Tears: Falmeri forces destroy the Nordic colony at Saarthal, driving the Nords back into the sea.

The Return: the Atmoran warlord Ysgramor gathers his famous Five Hundred Companions and retakes Saarthal from the Elves, thus founding the first Nordic Empire.

Nordic forces pursue and exterminate the Falmer, destroying all they can find of them and their culture.

The mysterious god-hero Pelinal Whitestrake appears. This mythical figure, considered an expression of human endeavors and willpower, wanders the world, fighting Elves, founding kingdoms and abandoning them.

FIRST ERA
1E 1
The Camoran Dynasty declares itself independent from the Summerset Isles, founding the independent kingdom of Valenwood. The Ayleid Hegemony uses this buffer kingdom to declare their own independence from the throne of Alinor. The Direnni lords, while also suitable remote and powerful enough to defy Summerset, fail to do so, remaining as a nominal tribute-kingdom.

Beginning of Nord history writing: Ysgramor records the events in the Elven kingdoms in his native runes, thus becoming the first human historian.

The Nords finish their conquest of modern-day Skyrim. The Falmer, apparently driven to extinction, disappear from recorded history.

Tension and small-scale skirmishes occur between the Nordic Empire and the surrounding Elven realms: the Direnni, Velothi, and the Ayleid sphere of influence.

1E 198
Civil war in the Ayleid Hegemony: the southern Barsaebic city-states chafe under the increasing dominance of the High Heartland Monachs. The Barsaeibics are conservatives who maintain strong connections with Alinor and Direnni. They are concerned over the Heartland's reliance on Daedric pacts, neglect of the Eight Divines, abuse of the Dawn Magics, and their general deviation and isolation from the old Alinor culture. A short civil war breaks loose, in which the Barsaebics are defeated by the Atataric alliance, a proxy army of the Heartland Monarchs. The remaining Barsaeibics flee into Argonia.

1E 222 - 272 or 1E 240-1E 415
The Nordic Empire conquers High Rock and northern Morrowind, subjugating the local Elven lords. Both the Direnni and the Chimer lords were disorganized and internally divided, easy prey for the unified Nordic armies.

The Nords reach a form of accommodation with the Ayleids: the borderland of Falkreath becomes a contested region, with both Nordic and Ayleid settlements.

1E 242-1E 243
The Alessian Rebellion:
  • A Nedic slave, later known as Alessia, instigates a rebellion in the slaver city of Sardavar Leed. Assisted by the god Morihaus (son of Kynareth), she overthrows the local lords and forms an army of liberated slaves. They travel around the Citadel in a counter-clockwise fashion, destroying Ayleid cities and swelling their ranks with liberated slaves.
  • Pelinal Whitestrake becomes the champion of the Alessian cause. He challenges the dangerous Ayleid sorcerer-kings in one-on-one duels, thus defeating them before they can use their powers against the main Nedic army.
  • Attack on Vahtacen, where many slaves are freed and join the army. Alessia assumes the name of Al-Esh (Elvish for "High Highness").
  • Pelinal claims the eastern lands for the Rebellion.
  • Fights in Sedor, where Pelinal reclaims the Thousand Strong of Sedor, a powerful Nedic tribe.
  • The army passes by the northern Ayleid cities, heading towards the shelter of Sancre Tor.
  • Several dissident Ayleid kings secretly support Alessia's rebellion. These were most likely lords of the perifery, attempting to undermine the power of the Heartland Kings.
  • The Alessian army finds shelter at Sancre Tor, a great hill in the unpopulated north-west. here, they await reinforcements from the north.
  • Alessia makes contact with the Nordic chieftains through messenger birds, imploring them for aid.
  • Pelinal calls out and defeats the sorceror-king Haromir of Copper and Tea at the foot of Sancre Tor.
  • Pelinal kills the Ayleid king Gordaur the Shaper in his palace at Ninendava.
  • Alessian forces meet the Nordic mercenaries at the Bridge of Heldon, in Falkreath. Together, they enact a bloody pogrom on the Elven population of this border region.
  • The united Nordic and Nedic armies marches south towards the Citadel, intent on taking the Ayleid capital.
  • The remaining Ayleid sorceror-kings, intent on countering the Rebellion, make a pact with the Daedric Prince Meridia, appointing the half-god Umaril the Unfeathered as their immortal champion.
  • The rebels attack the city of Ceya-Tar, where Pelinal kills Fire-king Hadhuul.
  • The united armies reach the shores of Lake Rumare. The Nordic and Nedic chieftains are uncertain if they can take the Citadel in a direct attack, and convene in the Council of Skiffs. They agree on a strategy of caution.
  • Pelinal, disgusted by what he perceives as cowardice, attacks the Citadel alone. He slaughters thousands of Ayleid and Daedric servants with his superhuman strenght. Answering his challenge, he duels and defeats Umaril, banishing his spirit into the Void. In his weakened state after the duel, is ambushed by the Ayleid sorceror-kings, who cut him in eight parts.
  • The Taking: emboldened by Pelinal's sacrifice, the rebel army attacks the next morning, killing the remaining defendants. With the center of their Empire in human hands, the reign of the Alessian Hegemony is over.
  • The last Ayleid city to be defeated by the Alessian army is Anutwyll. The city of Bravil is founded on its remains.

FIRST ERA, ALESSIAN EMPIRE
1E 243
The Alessian Empire is founded. Alessia becomes the first Empress, inheriting both the title and the priesthood of Akatosh from her figurehead Ayleid predecessor.

Remaining Ayleid cities in Colovia and the southern Niben are absorbed into the Empire as submissive client-states, or destroyed in case of resistance. Ayleid cities in exile are founded in Valenwood, Alinor, the Direnni Hegemony and Argonia.

The Cult of the Eight Divines and the Ancestor Moth Cult are founded. both hark back to Ayleid predecessors.

The Alessian Empire was at first a client-state to the larger Nordic Empire, though later on this relationship will reverse. In turn, the Alessians had various Colovian kingdoms, Nedic tribes and Ayleid enclaves under their rule. Falkreath is at this point part of Cyrodiil.

As a reward for their aid in battle, the Nordic chieftains are granted large stretches of land in the unpopulated west of the country. This is the start of the Colovian kingdoms.

1E 243-1E 498
Alessian power slowly grows and consolidates. Imperial culture develops from joint Nedic, Nordic and Elven traditions.

1E 266
Death of Alessia. The covenant with Akatosh begins, shielding Tamriel from Oblivion. The Dragonfires ignite and the Amulet of Kings assumes its modern function as Imperial soul-receptable. Belharza the Man-Bull, son of Alessia and Morihaus, assumes the throne.

Nedic and Nordic settlers migrate to Colovia, taking land from the remaining Ayleid city-states and Nedic settlements along the Strident (later Gold) Coast. Simultaneously, the populated tribelands along the Niben are pacified by Battlemages loyal to the Emperor, and brought into the fold of the Empire.

The warlike Colovians organize annual raids of the vulnerable Direnni and Breton cities of the Illiac Bay. These raids will sporadically continue for much of the First Era.

Emperor Ami-El assumes the throne.

1E 358
Ami-El lends his forces to Skyrim in battle against the Direnni Hegemony in the Western Reach. Anti-Elven sentiments are on the rise across the nations of men.

1E 361
The Alessian Reforms are adopted. The monotheistic Marukhati abolish the last Ayleid city-states in the east, and persecute any who do not live by the strict religious doctrines of their monkey-prophet, Marukh.

Nord High King Borgas enforces the Alessian Reforms throughout his empire, consisting of Skyrim, High Rock and northern Morrowind.

The Colovian Estates slowly isolate themselves from Alessian rule, assuming the character of sovereign kingdoms. They still pay tribute to the Empire, but are otherwise politically independent. Ayleid enclaves are tolerated in the west, and the faith of the Eight Divines, outlawed under the Alessians, survives here.

The Nibenay is under the yoke of the Marukhati. Dietary restrictions force the Nibenese to give up on many forms of agriculture and husbandry, and focus on trade. A sophisticated mercantile society develops. Restrictions on the worship of the Eight result in the worship of animal spirits and an eclectic mix of minor gods.

1E 369
High King Borgas, a staunch anti-Elven agitator, is killed by a Bosmeri Wild Hunt. In the ensuing War of Succession, the Nordic Empire falls apart. High Rock becomes part of the growing Direnni Hegemony.

1E 393
The Marukhati sack the temple of Malada, one of the last remaining Ayleid settlements in the east.

Sload slave raids terrorize Colovia.

The self-centered and isolationist Colovian Estates begin to harass one another. The kingdoms of Kvatch and Skingrad squabble over their shared border.

1E 461
Emperor Gorieus assumes the throne. There is no mention of another emperor until Hestra around 1E 1000. Either Gorieus ruled for 500 years (not impossible), or there were other, forgotten Emperors between them. The Alessian priesthood is the true power in this period, having reduced the position of Emperor to that of a puppet ruler.

1E 472
Conflicts between Kvatch and Skingrad cease thanks to the royal marriage of Rislav Larich, the eight child of the king of Skingrad, with Belene, a daughter of the king of Kvatch.

1E 478
Emperor Gorieus defeats Nord High King Kjoric the White in battle.

A plague sweeps through Colovia. King Mhorus of Skingrad is among the victims. His son, Dorald, is a devout Alessian and cedes his kingdom to the Emperor. he is killed by his brother Rislav, who usurps the throne with general consent of the people of Skingrad. Emperor Gorieus, enraged over this insult, mounts an invasion, but his legions are destroyed in an ambush by the joined forces of Skingrad and Kvatch. This defeat, a first for the Imperial legions, inspires resistance to the Alessian encroachment across Tamriel.

1E 479
Emboldened by the events in Colovia, Ryain Direnni outlaws the Alessian Reforms in High Rock. His forces fight the Alessians, and harass Colovia from the sea, attempting to push towards the Heartland.

1E 482
The Battle of Glenumbra Moors: Aiden Direnni defeats the combined forces of the Alessian Order and Nord High King Hoag Merkiller. The new High King, Ysmir Wulfharth, annuls the alliance with the Alessians, reinstates the Nordic Pantheon and destroys the Alessian temples in his lands. Temporary end of Alessian power beyond the borders of Cyrodiil.

1E 808
The Ra Gada: Yokudan refugees arrive on the shores of Hammerfell, conquering the province from native Orcs and Nedes. Redguard conquests claims large swathes of Colovia, especially in the Gold Coast.

The city-fortress of Sutch is founded.

c. 1E 900
Despite initial hostilities, relations between Redguard and Imperials quickly improve. A vibrant cultural exchange takes place.

c. 1E 948
Redguard blademaster Gaiden Shinji oversees the creation of the Arena in the Imperial City.

Empress Hestra assumes the throne. She restores much of Alessian power beyond the Cyrodiilic border, and improves the Empire's road network. Various runestones are thought to have been erected in her time.

1E 1030
Legion forces led by Hestra conquer the Reach.

1E 1033
Imperial forces combat piracy along the Black Marsh shore. For the first time, Imperials enter the heart of this province, and chart its waterways.

Hestra manages to restore relations with the Colovian kingdoms. Together, they perform several joint attacks on Valenwood, and defend against Sloadic slave raids.

MIDDLE DAWN
Dragon Break
A sub-group of the Alessian Order called the Marukhati Selectives break time itself through a ritual meant to purify Akatosh from his Elven influences. Between the fifteenth and twenty-third century of the First Era, linear time does not exist.

Testimony from Empress Hestra's soul claims that Cyrodiil became an Empire across the stars.

Mention of Emperor Shor-El, whose reign was lost within the timeless time. He claims that Cyrodiil became an egg.

FIRST ERA, AGAIN
1E 2200-1E 2260
Empress Herda takes the throne. Improves relations with Colovia somewhat. May also have lived after the War of Righteousness.

The Thrassian Plague, a disease engineered by the Sload, kills over half of Tamriel's population.

Bendu Olo, the Baron of Anvil, leads the All Flags Navy in the Thrassian War - a joint effort of the nations surrounding the Abecean Sea. The island-kingdom of Thras is sunk beneath the waves (it will late resurface).

The military success of Bendu Olo leads to the Oloi Confederacy, a short-lived movement of unity among the Colovians. For the first time, the Colovian kingdoms are more powerful that the Nibenay.

1E 2321
The War of Righteousness commences: emboldened by their recent success, the Colovian Estates refuse to give further tribute to the Nibenay, and curtail traffic along the Golden Road. Without this source of revenue, the Alessian Order collapses in on itself. What follows is an exceptionally bloody struggle, as various Nibenese and Colovian factions attempt to lay claim on the White-Gold Throne.

1E 2331
End of the War of Righteousness. The Maruhati faith and the Alessian Order are outlawed, and the First Empire is officially dissolved. Colovia and Nibenay remain divided, and their respective cultures continue to diverge for the next centuries. The line of Alessia is broken, and no Emperor will sit on the throne until the rise of Reman, nearly 400 year later.

TIMELINE: from the Akaviri Invasion to the Tiber Wars
FIRST ERA, REMAN EMPIRE
1E 2703
The Akaviri Invasion: an army of Tsaeci, snake-men from the mysterious eastern continent of Akvair, land on the northern shores of Tamriel. They begin an unstoppable march towards Cyrodiil.

Reman Cyrodiil, a warlord said to be born from the ground on the heights of Sancre Tor, unites Colovia and Nibenay against the Tsaeci threat. He crushes the invasion at Pale Pass, proving his right to the White-Gold Throne. The Tsaeci perceive that Reman is Dragonborn, and swear their eternal loyalty to him.

The Colovian kings accept Reman as Emperor, and surrender their realms to him. The king of Kvatch offends Reman during this ceremony, and is killed. Kvatch remains in disfavor during the Second Empire.

Reman reforges Imperial civilization, incorporating elements from Colovian, Nibenese, Breton and Tsaeci culture. A new network of highways and fortifications is built under his reign and the reigns of his sons.

1E 2703- 1E 2762
Using the power of a unified Cyrodiil, Reman wages an aggressive campaign of conquest. All of Tamriel save Morrowind, the Summerset Isles and Argonia become part of the Second Empire. Reman even attempted conquest of spaces beyond Nirn, such as the Nordic Underworld or the Void.

The city of Sutch is conquered by Reman, and granted to the King of Anvil.

Founding of the Royal Imperial Mananauts, a subsection of the Imperial Legion who undertook several expeditions into the Void with the first Battlespires. A colony is built on the moon of Masser.

1E 2714
Valenwood is conquered by Reman.

1E 2762
Reman I dies, is succeeded by Emperor Brazollus Dor. He rejuvenates the faith of Morihaus and the Nibenese animal spirit cults.

(c. 1E 2790)
Emperor Brazollus Dor dies, and leaves his Empire in the hands of his adopted son, Emperor Kastav, until his chosen heir comes of age. Kastav imprisons multiple pretenders to the throne who were deemed unworthy, earning his nickname "the Warden".

During Kastav's reign, the Empire is beset by Nordic and Argonian rebellions.

1E 2805, 1E 2806 or 1E 2812
Emperor Reman II assumes the throne. He immediately embarks on a military campaign against the Nordic rebels, whom he strikes down shortly after.

1E 2811
The Battle of Argonia. The last resistance in Black Marsh is defeated, and the Argonian insurgents retreat to the toxic interior of the province.

1E 2837
The province of Argonia is officially created - the first time this area of Tamriel is subjected to foreign rule.

1E 2840
Reman II declares war on Morrowind. The Four-Score war will continue for the rest of the Remanite dynasty.

1E 2851
Reman II dies in battle against the Dunmer. He is succeeded by the Expunged Reman, an Emperor of whom no information survives whatsoever.

1E 2877
Reman III takes the throne.

1E 2920
Reman III attempts to broker a truce with Morrowind. Before negotiations can conclude, he and his son Juilek are murdered by the Morag Tong and his Akaviri councellors.

SECOND or COMMON ERA, AKAVIRI POTENTATE
2E 1
Versidue-Shaie becomes the first Akaviri Potentate, ruling the Empire in the absence of a true Emperor. He declares this the start of the Second, or Common Era.

2E 230
Vanus Galerion founds the first Mages Guild in Firsthold, the Summerset Isles. For the first time in Tamriel's history, magical education and services are available to the larger population.

The Mages Guild is banished from Summerset, and subsequently moves to the Imperial City.

The provinces rebel against the rule of the Potentate. Many see the absence of a "real" Emperor as a chance to regain their independence. Others protest the illegitimate power grab of the Akaviri.

2E 283
Council of Bardmont: pressured by provincial opposition to his rule, Versidue-Shaie convenes the Elder Council and declares martial law across the Empire.

2E 283-2E 320
Intense conflict across Tamriel between Imperial forces and various local rebels. Versidue-Shaie is victorious, and the Legion is left as the only real military force in the land.

2E 309
The Province of Elsweyr is founded by the political union of the twin Khajiit kingdoms of Anequina and Pelletine.

Orsinium, the exile-city of the Orcs is granted the status of Imperial Province - the first time the Orcs are granted citizen status.

Versidue-Shaie is assassinated, and succeeded by his son Dinieras-Ves (Tsaeci being supposedly immortal, all come to their end through assassination).

2E 320
Dinieras-Ves "the Iron", a kinsman of the Potentate, founds the Syffim, a forerunner of the Fighter's Guild. This mercenary force was meant to suppress banditry in the provinces following Versidue-Shaie's destruction of all local military power. The Syffim is based on strict concepts of Akaviri combat and warrior-honor.

2E 321
The Guild Act sanctions the guilds of Tinkers, Cobblers, Prostitutes, Scribes, Architects, Brewers, Vintners, Weavers, Ratcatchers, Furriers, Cooks, Astrologers, Healers, Tailors, Minstrels, and Barristers. Also codified the Mages and Fighters Guilds, founded in previous years. later expansions sanction more guilds.

2E 324
Potentate Versidue-Shaie is murdered by the Morag Tong. He is succeeded by his son, Savirien-Chorak.

Savirien-Chorak allows the reforming of local armies, so his vassals can properly defend themselves.

2E 430 - 2E 431
Potentate Savirien-Chorak and his heirs are murdered by the Morag Tong. End of the Akaviri Potentate and the Second Empire. The provinces regain their independence and Cyrodiil falls apart in independent kingdoms and city-states.

Orsinium is razed by an alliance of Bretons and Redguards.

The city of Sutch is re-taken by Redguard forces.

Note: there is mention of another Potentate, Sidri-Ashak, who expanded the road network and founded new runestones. He was considered one of the "strong" Potentates, implying thee were even more, unnamed Akaviri Potentates. Confusion may stem from the unique and secretive nature of the Tsaeci.

SECOND or COMMON ERA, INTERREGNUM
2E 432-896
The Interregnum: a series of mad and incompetent rulers attempt to claim the Imperial throne. Widespread chaos, disease and war create a period of decay and anti-intellectualism, with many being convinced that this is Divine punishment for the Emperor's death.

2E 560-2E 603
The Khanaten Flu spreads across Tamriel, and affects the Nibenay especially. Argonians, being immune to the disease ,as thought to be the ones responsible for engineering the sickness. The Kothringi, a tribe of Nedes who had isolated themselves from mainstream Imperial culture, are driven to extinction.

2E 563
Voyage of the Crimson Ship: the last remaining Kothringi flee Black Marsh. They are turned away at every port they meet, and set sail for the west, never to reappear.

Durcorach the Black Drake, a Reachman chieftain, conquers the Imperial City and declares himself Emperor. Beginning of the dynasty of the "Longhouse Emperors", a short, eccentric and barbarian period in Cyrodiil's history. Their reign is supported by the house Tharn of Nibenay, an infamous Battlemage clan.

2E 541
Emperor Durcorach dies during an invasion of Daggerfall. He is succeeded by an unnamed son.

The second Longhouse Emperor dies, and is succeeded by his son, Leovic. Born and raised in the Reach, he is considered eccentric and savage by both the court and the people.

2E 573
Varen's Rebellion: a popular uprising orchestrated by Varen Aquilarios, king of Chorrol and a former supporter of the Longhouse reign. Varen uses rumors of Daedra worship among the Reachmen to galvanize the Colovian Estates, and uses their power to liberate the Nibenese cities from Longhouse control. After taking the Imperial City and killing Leovic, Varen proclaims himself Emperor.

2E 577
Emperor Varen reclaims the Amulet of Kings from the Reman-Era fortress of Sancre Tor. However, the amulet does not accept him as a true Emperor, meaning he has no Covenant with Akatosh to protect and legitimize him.

2E 579
Emperor Varen uses illicit magic in an attempt to force the Amulet of Kings' acceptance. The ritual is sabotaged, and Varen disappears in the ensuing chaos. The protection against Oblivion guaranteed by the amulet falters, and the Daedric Prince Molag Bal uses this opening in an attempt to conquer and enslave Nirn. Daedric incursions terrorize the following years, and a period of madness, murder and decay follows.

Emperor Varen is succeeded by his widow, Clivia Tharn, who declares herself Empress Regent.

2E 582
The Alliance Wars: foreign powers attempt to claim the White-Gold Throne. Shifting alliances between the Provincial kings and nations keep this conflict going for several hundred years. Cyrodiil and the Imperial City suffer massive damage.

Bal's Daedric incursions stop after a ritual challenge leaves him weakened and unprotected from attacks by his peers.

2E 828
Presumed birth date of Tiber Septim.

2E 852 - 2E 896
The Tiber Wars, in which Tiber Septim conquers the entirety of Tamriel, starting the Septim Empire and the Third Era.

2E 852
Cuhlecain, the Colovian king of Falkreath, attempts to unite the Colovian Estates in a bid to conquer the White-Gold Throne.

Cuhlecian allies with Skyrim against the Reachmen in order to secure his northern borders. His army is led by general Hjalti Early-Beard, hailing from the Breton city of Alcaire.

Battle of Old Hrol'dan: Hjalti takes the city from the Reachmen, and uses Thu'um to tear down the walls. His soldiers give him the name Talos, or Stormcrown, and Cuchlecain adopts him as his only son and heir.

Sack of Sancre Tor. An alliance of Nordic and Breton nobles invade northern Cyrodiil, opposing Cuhlecain's ambitions. General Talos stops them at the sacred city of Sancre Tor, and rediscovers the Amulet of Kings in the tomb of Reman III beneath the city. The resounding victory leads the Nords to turn away from their Breton allies, and join Cuhlecain's armies.

After a year of heavy fighting, Cuhlecain unites the Colovian Estates.

2E 854
The Taking of the Imperial City. The Niben battlemage aristocracy surrenders to Cuhlecain, unifying Colovia and Nibenay once again.

On the Eve of his coronation, Cuhlecain is killed by a Breton assassin. The Imperial Palace is set aflame. Talos survives his own assassination attempt (losing his voice due to a neck-wound) and declares himself Emperor, taking the Imperial name of Tiber Septim.

Emperor Septim continues to unite and reform Cyrodiil, and prepares for his nascent conquest of all Tamriel

2E 857
The Moth Rebellion. A secret society known as the Moth Eaters instigate a popular uprising in the Imperial City, after Tiber Septim attempts to revive the Marukhati faith in the One. The rebellion is struck down. Tiber will later support the faith in the Eight Divines.

Conquest of Skyrim and the Breton kingdoms is underway.

An Orcish delegation petitions Tiber Septim for citizen rights. Tiber promises them a Province and equal rights in return for aid in his conquests. Actual fulfillment of these promises would wait until the time of Uriel VII.

Battle of the Bjoulsae. Admiral Amiel Richton crushes Wayrest's naval power, effectively conquering High Rock.

2E 861
Skirmishes with Elsweyr, Argonia, and the Almeri Dominion. Emperor Septim is focused on claiming the humam kingdoms first, and his battles with the Elves and beastmen are mostly undecided.

Battle of Senchal. After the Khajiiti city refuses to surrender, general Pottreid orders a brutal assault, targeting both soldiers and civilians. The battle is erased from official Empire history.

2E 863
Battle of Black Rocks. The Aldmeri Dominion decimate the Third Legion.

2E 864
Battle of Hunding Bay. An alliance of Redguard Forebears and Imperial navy led by Amiel Richton defeats prince A'Tor, leader of the Redguard Crowns faction, at Stros M'Kai. After the battle, the Imperials turn on their Forebear allies and occupy Hammerfell, installing several Provincial Governors.

The First Pocket Guide to the Empire is published as propaganda for the early Empire.

The Stros M'Kai Uprising. The Imperial Fleet in Hammerfell is defeated by the Restless League, a Redguard pirate facton. Admiral Richton is killed in battle.

Rebellion of Sentinel. Baron Volag of the Forebears retakes the city of Sentinel with a Crown-Forebear alliance.

First Treaty of Stros M'Kai: Tiber Septim is forced to renegotiate the status of Hammerfell as an Imperial Province. Local rule is legitimized.

With the human kingdoms defeated, Tiber focuses on Elsweyr and Argonia. Conquest is swift, though the poisonous Argonian heartland remains inaccessible.

2E 882
Invasion of Morrowind. Despite the Dunmer's fearsome reputation, Tiber rightly recognizes Morrowind as the weakest of the Elven nations due to Great House infighting. He is proven right, and the Dunmer defenses crumble before the Legions.

Sack of Mournhold. Imperial forces plunder the ancient Indoril capital.

The Armistice is signed. Vivec, perceiving the hopeless position of his people, initiates peace talks with the Empire. He offers access to Morrowind's ebony mines and the Dwemer construct Numidium in return for certain cultural and political concessions.

c. 2E 895
Tiber gains control over the Numidium through the Mantella, a soul gem-like device which incorporated soul aspects of the Battlemage Zurin Arctus, the old Nordic king Wulfhart, and others. The Brass God proves a powerful weapon.

2E 896
Surrender of Alinor. Despite heavy resistance, the Summerset Isles fall in a matter of days to the might of the Numidium. With the last independent kingdom under his control, Tiber Septim is now the ruler of the entirety of Tamriel. Start of the Third Empire.

After the war, the Numidium is used to crush local resistance and replace unfavorable rulers with Tiber's followers. In this way, the last Colovian kings are deposed. This continued abuse causes a malfunction in the Mantella, which ultimately destroys the Numidum.

TIMELINE: from the Start of the Third Era to the Warp in the West
THIRD ERA, SEPTIM EMPIRE
3E 12
Encyclopedia Tamrielica is published.

3E 38
Tiber Septim dies, his grandson Pelagius succeeds him.

3E 41
Pelagius is assassinated by the Dark Brotherhood. Having no children, the throne passes to his second-cousin Kintyra. Some scholars consider this a break with the bloodline of Tiber Septim.

3E 48
Kintyra dies, succeeded by Uriel. Emperor Uriel I is known as a tenderhearted emperor.

3E 64
Emperor Uriel dies, succeeded by his son Uriel II. Similar in kindness to his father, though his reign is cursed with plagues and insurrections. Remembered as a weak and ineffectual Emperor.

3E 67
Potema, the future Wolf Queen, is born to crown prince Pelagius II. She is the second of four children (the others being Antiochus, Cephorus, and Magnus - all future Emperors).

3E 82
Uriel II dies, succeeded by his son, Pelagius II. He inherits the debts of his father's poor financial and judicial judgment.

Pelagius II disbands the Elder Council, only allowing members back in return for large tribute. In this way, the Empire restores its depleted treasury, though the adverse effects on the Elder Council will be felt in the future.

3E 99
Pelagius II dies, succeeded by his son, Antiochus. Quite unlike the austere earlier Septims, Emperor Antiochus was a hedonistic and indulgent man, much given to food, wine, good clothes, and women. His reign was marked by civil wars, surpassing even that of Uriel II.

3E 110
War of the Isle: Emperor Antiochus nearly loses Summerset to the Maormeri invasion of King Orgnum. He is only saved by a freak storm, rumored to be the work of the Psiijic Order.

3E 111
Sir Amiel Lannus founds the Knights of the Nine, a knightly order intent on reclaiming the relics of Pelinal Whitestrake.

3E 112
Antiochus dies, succeeded by his daughter Kintyra II. Her first cousin, Uriel Mantiarco (the son of Potema) accuses her of being a bastard, and unites rebellious kings of High Rock, Skyrim, and Morrowind in an attack on the Empire. Kintyra is taken captive in the Iliac Bay.

3E 114
The rumored date of Kintyra II's execution. In reality, she was kept alive in captivity for several more years.

3E 119
Pelagius III, son of Magnus Septim, is born.

3E 121
Uriel Mantiarco conquers the Imperial City. He proclaims himself Emperor Uriel III.

War of the Red Diamond. The surviving sons of Pelagius II, Cephorus and Magnus, defy Uriel III and his mother Potema. Skyrim and northern Morrowind continue to support Uriel III, but High Rock defects. The opposition garners support among the other provinces. Opinions in Cyrodiil are highly divided.

The Knights of th Nine are torn apart by opposing loyalties in the war.

3E 123, 23 Frostfall
The Day of the Broken Diamond: Kintyra II is murdered in her cell in High Rock.Considered by some to be the "true" end of the Tiber bloodline: lineage of later Emperors is doubtful.

3E 127
Uriel III is captured by his enemies during a battle in Hammerfell. His carriage is set alight by an angry mob, burning the Emperor alive.

Cephorus I is proclaimed Emperor. His reign is dominated by a lengthy war against his sister and her dwindling allies.

3E 137
After a long siege, Potema is finally killed in her stronghold in Solitude.

3E 139
Sir Casimir of the Knights of the Nine accidentally murders a beggar in Chorrol. He is forced to leave the Gauntlets of the Crusader, a relic of Pelinal, on the floor of the local temple of Stendarr. Since then, no-one has been able to move them.

3E 140
Cephorus I dies, is succeeded by his elderly brother, Magnus.

3E 145, 8th of Second Seed
Magnus dies, is succeeded by his son, Pelagius III (the Mad). Empero Pelagius III was quickly removed from office due to his debilitating insanity, and spends the rest of his life in a series of hospitals and temples of Mara.

3E 153, 2nd of Suns Dawn
Pelagius III dies. His dyaing day is later celebrated as Mad Pelagius, a fool's festival. He is succeeded by his wife, the Dunmeri Katariah, former duchess of Vvardenfell, until their son comes of age. She faces heavy opposition from the court due to her race.

Empress Katariah travels extensively throughout the provinces, something no Emperor had done since Tiber Septim. Diplomatic relations with the provincial rulers are reinforced, and the Empress becomes wildly popular among the common people.

3E 200
Katariah dies in an bandit's ambush in Black Marsh, later discovered to be the work of a disenfranchised branch of the Septim family. She is succeeded by Cassynder.

Emperor Cassynder suffers from poor health, possibly due to his half-Elven heritage. He does not have the strenght to govern his kingdom properly, and leaves much work to his half-brother, Uriel Lariat.

3E 202
Cassynder dies, to be succeeded by Uriel Lariat, the child of Katariah and a consort she took after Pelagius III's death. Although Uriel IV was adopted by Cassynder and distantly related to TIber Septim, the people and the Elder Council rejected his claim to the throne. His long reign was marked by sedition.

Having grown in power and influence since the days of Pelagius II, the Elder Council now found it easy to defy the Emperor.

3E 247
Uriel IV dies. By vote of the Elder Council, his son Andorak is disinherited and Emperor Cephorus II is elected: a Nordic Jarl whose ties to the original bloodline are considered stronger. Andorak rejects the Council's decision, leading to another civil war.

3E 249
Rise of the Camoran Usurper: Haymon Hart-King, member of the Bosmeri royal house of Camoran, attempts to conquer western Tamriel with an army of mercenaries, Daedra and undead. Attempts to stop him prove fruitless, as the Emperor is preoccupied by the war against Andorak.

An opportunistic pirate alliance conquers the city of Anvil following the Usurper's passage. The city becomes a lawless pirate town, preying on the Imperial supply lines in the war against the Usurper.

3E 256
The Elder Council grants Andorak the High Rock kingdom of Shornhelm in return for an armistice and aid against the Camoran Usurper.

3E 267
An alliance of Bretonnic kingdoms defeat the Camoran Usurper. The Empire plays a relatively minor part in the victory, leading to increased provincial dissent.

Commodore Fasil Umbranox retakes the city of Anvil from the pirate Torradan ap Dugal, and is named Count of Anvil by the Emperor. Rather than trying to pacify the town, he burns it to the ground and builds a new city on the remains.

Umbranox reclaims the city of Sutch for Anvil. As the Redguard armies are exhausted by war, the annexation goes unopposed.

3E 268
Cpehorus II dies, to be succeeded by Uriel V. In order to restore faith in the Empire, he proposes an aggressive expansionist policy beyond the borders of Tamriel.

3E 271
Uriel V conquers the island of Roscrea.

3E 276
Uriel V conquers the island of Cathnoquey.

3E 279
Uriel V conquers the island of Yneslea.

3E 282
Uriel V conquers Black Harbor on Esroniet.

3E 284
Uriel V conquers the island of Esroniet.

3E 285
Uriel VI is born shortly before his father's final departure for Akavir.

Two more children of Uriel VI, Morihatha and Eloisa, are born a month after his departure to a different mother.

3E 288
Uriel V invades the mainland of Akavir. Two cities are captured and renamed to Ionith and Septimia.

Both colonies struggle to thrive: the weather is unusually bad, causing multiple harvests to fail. Supplies and soldiers from Tamriel ae frequently lost in unnatural storms.

3E 289
Battle in the Northern Mountains. Uriel V challenges a Tsaeci army, but is driven back. Shortly followed by a siege on Ionith.

3E 290
Battle of Ionith. The city falls and Uriel V is killed in battle. The Tenth Legion is decimated in the defense.

The Battle of Septimia: two days after the fall of its Ionith, its sister-city meets the same fate. The last colonists depart from Akavir.

3E 290
Following the death of his father, the five-year old Uriel VI is crowned Emperor. His mother Thonica is given a limited regency, and the Elder Council retains the true power.

3E 307
The Elder Council reluctantly grants Uriel VI, aged 22, his full license to rule. They are unwilling to relinquish the many privileges they had usurped in this time.

3E 313
Through careful abuse of his right to veto decisions, the Emperor regains much of his power from the Elder Council.

3E 314
Pelagius IV is born to Eloisa.

3E 320
Uriel VI dies after a fall from his horse. He is succeeded by his sister, Morihatha. Many provinces have been in a state of rebellion since the rule of Cephorus II, and Morihatha starts a careful campaign to win them back.

3E 331
The Second Edition of "A Pocket Guide to the Empire" is published. the Elder Council condemns the work due to illicit contents. The authors are executed, and no known copies of the books survive.

3E 335
Lorgren Benirus, respectable citien of Anvil, is discovered to be an illicit necromancer. An angry mob storms his manor and kills him.

3E 339
Morihatha is assassinated by the Dark Brotherhood, supposedly by order of an Argonian councilman, Thoricles Romus, due to the Empress' refusal to send troops to his troubled lands. Thoricles maintains his innocence throughout his trial and execution.

Pelagius IV, nephew of Morihatha, assumes the throne.

3E 346
Uriel VII is born.

3E 368
Pelagius IV dies, is succeeded by his son Uriel VII. He continues the pacification of Tamriel, often through ruthless and underhanded means.

3E 370
The Eternal Champion (protagonist of TES1: Arena) is born.

3E 375
Uriel VII's Agent (protagonist of TES2: Daggerfall) is born.

3E 376
Jagar Tharn, First Battlemage and advisor of the Emperor, retrieves the Staff of Chaos (Balac-thurm).

3E 377
Crown Prince Geldall, the official heir of Uriel Septim VII, is born.

3E 378
Prince Enman is born.

3E 380
Prince Ebel is born.

3E 389-3E 399
Start of the Imperial Simulacrum: Jagar Tharn imprisons Uriel VII in Oblivion and disguises himself as the Emperor through magic. Tharn uses the power of the Balac-thurm and his connections with the Daedra (notably Merhrunes Dagon to keep his deceit going for ten years. His misrule proves disastrous for the Empire, causing several inter-provincial wars and bringing the Septim rule to the brink of destruction.

3E 396

War of Bend'r-mahk: Skyrim defeats combined Breton and Redguard forces and claims several border cities.

3E 39?
Invasion of the Battlespire: Mehrunes Dagon attacks the Battlespire, a fortress of the Imperial Battlemages in Oblivion. The invasion is defeated, and the alliance between Tharn and Dagon is broken. The Battlespire, one of the last functional bastions of Imperial power beyond Nirn, is ruined.

3E 398, 29 Sub's Dusk
Archbishop Calaxes of the Temple of the One is murdered by Imperial agents. This controversial figure, a bastard son of Uriel VII, plotted a rebellion to establish a new Marukathi theocracy.

3E 402=403
The War of Betony, between Daggerfall and the Redguard kingdom of Sentinel. Lord Mogref of Betony attempts to vassal himself to Daggerfall for monetary reasons. Sentinel objects to this. Daggerfall wins the war, though king Lysandus dies in battle.

The Warp in the West, also known as the Miracle of Peace: Uriel VII's agent recovers the Mantella and is approached by various factions of the Iliac Bay, each intent to use it for their own purposes. The world-negating properties of the Numidium, cause a new Dragon Break, in which six conflicting timelines simultaneously occur:
  • The Mantella is sold to the royal house of Daggerfall, who use it to unite the western kingdoms of High Rock.
  • The Mantella is sold to the royal house of Wayrest, who use it to unite the eastern kingdoms of High Rock.
  • The Mantella is sold to the Gortwog of Orsinium, who uses it to conquer the Dragontail Mountains.
  • The Mantella is sold to the royal house of Sentinel, who use it to unite northern Hammerfell.
  • The Mantella is sold to the the necromancer-king Mannimarco, who uses it to ascend to godhood.
  • The Mantella is given to the Underking, an undead echo of the various souls used in constructing it. Having regained his heart, the Underking dies a mortal death, and the Numidium is unmade.
Following these events, the remaining kingdoms of the Iliac Bay make peace, and the Orcish people are finally accepted as citizens of the Empire. Mannimarco loss some of his power, but remains as the God of Worms.

TIMELINE: the Present
c. 3E 420-427
The Empire is shaken by the question of succession. Uriel VII is old, and in poor health. He has three declared heirs: Geldall, Enman and Ebel, but some believe them to be doppelgangers planted during Jagar Tharn's tenure. Public protests in the Imperial City have been violently suppressed.

The trans-Niben acquisition. The lands of the southern Nibenay are claimed by Cyrodiil. Formerly, the lower west bank and western side of Lleyawiin were part of Elsweyr, while the thick jungle of Blackwood was considered territory of several Argonian tribes. Only the eastern part of Leyawiin was officially Imperial territory. Under the new arrangement, all of this land becomes part of the County of Lleyawiin under Marius Caro.

Expropriated Khajiiti landowners found the Renrijra Krin, an guerrilla organization. They monopolize the trade in Moon Sugar and Skooma in order to fund their rebellion. The trade grows exponentially.

Argonian tribes of Blackwood become increasingly aggressive. Besides defending their homeland, they also appear to become much more zealous in blocking the borders of Argonia. The Imperial Legion is called in to strike down both Khajiit and Argonian insurrections.

Many Argonians from across Tamriel suddenly feel the need to return to Black Marsh. Simultaneously, the fauna and flora of Black Marsh become much more dangerous, forcing several Imperial colonies to evacuate.

The Mannimarcean tradition of necromancy begins an aggressive expansion into Cyrodiil, often conflicting with the official, Mages Guild-sanctioned styles of necromancy. Many call for a complete ban on the practice.

Dunmer associates of House Hlaalu begin to monopolize trade along the Blue Road in Cheydinhal.

3E 421
Greywyn Blenwyth founds the Crimson Scars, a Vampiric splinter group of the Dark Brotherhood. His intends to overtake the Brotherhood by infecting its members with Porphyric Hemophilia. His faction has its lair in the southern Blackwoods.

3E 423
Corvus Umbranox, Count of Anvil, disappears due to the interference of the Daedric Prince Nocturnal. His wife, Millona Umbranox, becomes Countess-Regent in his absence. People find it strangely difficult to remember the Count's name, or the exact circumstances of his disappearance.

c. 3E 427
In Morrowind, a former prisoner of the Empire is released in return for forced service in the Blades. He or she is to research rumors of the Sixth House. This person, later to become the Nerevarine, will become instrumental in the torrid political scene of Vvardenfell.

Time of the Bloodmoon Prophecy, a ritual hunt of the Daedric Prince Hircine.

Northwest Cyrodiil is plagued by marauding Nord clansmen. Charus Valga, the Count of Chorrol, departs on a military campaign in the Valus Mountains.

Arriana Valga, Countess of Chorrol, aims to marry her daughter Alessia to Marius Caro, the Count of Lleyawiin. Such a marriage between Colovian and Nibenese nobility would be politically advantageous (especially seeing the fragile state of the Septim line), were it not that Alessia holds Argonian and Khajiit "beastmen" in extreme contempt, and refuses to live amongst them.

A new outbreak of the Khanaten Flu has been signaled along the border with Argonia. Rumors abound that the Argonian shamans have manufactured the disease as retaliation for the trans-Niben acquisition.

Haderus Goldwine, the Duke of Colovia, is old an expected to die in the following years. his two sons are at each other's throats for the inheritance, while his cousin, Ormellius Goldwine, manages the County.

In the Sutch, a criminal syndicate known as the Kali Mes becomes prominent. The Mes oppose Imperial governance and call for a reunification with Hammerfell. They have great public support and are secretly bankrolled by influential Redguard merchants and religious orders.
